Meyerton at a glance

Essentially a rural area, Meyerton is a little town that lies approximately 50 kilometres south of Johannesburg falling into an area known as the Vaal Triangle - a roughly triangular locale bounded by VereenigingVanderbijlpark and Sasolburg - although Meyerton, which lies just north of Vereeniging, is included in this area. Together they form a substantial urban region that straddles the Vaal River and is home to some major industry - Sasol and Mittal Steel processing facilities lie out here.

Meyerton came into existence with the discovery of the 'Black Reef' - a vein of gold that ran through a number of farms out here on the banks of the Klip River. There is a distinctly rural feel to this part of the country. Just outside of Johannesburg one might be, but there is immediately a sense of having escaped the confines of city living, and the access to both the Klip River and the Vaal Dam, a very popular weekend haunt, makes it that much more enticing.

Midvaal offers a spectacle scenery of rolling Eikenhof hills and farmlands that stretch across Walkerville and De Deur, west of the R59 highway as well as the spectacular Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve to the east of the R59 highway. Situated along the R59 freeway, about 35 minutes' drive from Johannesburg, is the historical monument, the Block House in the Midvaal. Block house was built by the British as a check-point during the Anglo-Boer war of 1899-1902 to guard the railway line. Midvaal has become an industrial hub in recent years and is home to many well-known companies.

The two major eco-tourism attractions to this region are the Vaal River and Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve in the Midvaal.

"Converted to a Huizemark in October 2007 is the best move I've ever made" says Nina.
